Watching Bassmaster Live on Monday.. Mark Daniels Jr. was fishing a drop shot and targeting fish that he saw on his graph. Most of his casts were short, in the direction of the indication on his electronics. Casey Ashley was throwing a Carolina Rig.. casting to a location on the bottom that his electronics indicated rocks/boulders and might hold fish. I know that it is totally apples and oranges comparing small mouth to largemouth.. but is there a lesson to learn from these two techniques that can apply to Texas fishing? I think Casey was fishing a point.. I'm not sure where MDJ was fishing other than what looked like a really big flat. Would love to hear some discussion.

There are always several ways to catch them. Some are better that others. You have to watch getting locked into a certain way. Fish your strengths. Several were video game fishing because the fish would bite that way and that's in their wheelhouse. Fishing the other guys strengths usually gets you beat. Often badly unless you are pretty decent at it as well.
You also need to be good at as many things as you can so you can be versatile. Even at the Elite Series there are plenty that pretty weak at certain techniques. You know they are trying to get better. Still you have your shallow guys, your deep guys, your flippers, your crankers, your finesse.......

Both of those techniques will work on any lake all over the country. Whenever the fish are offshore I have both those rigged up and on the deck. Might not use the drop shot a ton but I've caught some good fish on it and it will get bit

MDJ was fishing points as well, that area had a series of small cuts and finger points, pretty classic immediate post spawn areas. They both were fishing their strengths, MDJ likes to look at and target individual fish with his electronics instead of casting and using the bait to find them. Think of it in terms to shallow water targets you can see, you can cast to them from a distance or get closer and pitch. Not an apples to apples comparison but paints the picture.

You have to remember most were fishing a post spawn pattern on the lake they were fishing. Those same tactics work well in the south during post spawn as well.

Garmin won this tournament. And the last FLW tournament. And the FLW AOY. Just something to think about.
