What’s the average life span of a powerhead? What’s the main cause for trouble in outboard motors? Poor maintenance? Bad luck? Or just flat out torture?

Just depends.I've got a 1996 Mercury 225 EFI that still runs great.Life of an outboard is good maintenance and how you treat it.Always good clean fresh gas also. thumb

no air cleaner =good place for mud dobbers.
lake water cooling =cold seize due to not warming up on every start.
clogged/worn cooling system due to debris in lake.
lean fuel/oil due to not running often enough or aged/bad fuel
other than those common problems , what could go wrong ?
