Favorite fluke rod, line, reel? Tip up or tip down #12436492 09/22/17 04:36 AM

I'm wondering a few things on fluke technique.

Lately I've been using a 6 6 halo spinning rod, with an old, slow reel on 12lb mono, 2/0 hook and a zoom fluke.

But it's giving me some grief... the reel eats slack too slow, and Ive had fish crash the fluke so hard they simply snap the line in one fell swoop. I also seem to enjoy a small pinch weight right above the hook. The mono seems very stretchy at a distance, and the rod tip doesn't seem to put a lot of power into a hook set at a distance either. Up close, it has a lot of power, but that's not always when the bite happens ... has me really rethinking the entire setup.

I also can't decide if I should be working the fluke rod tip up or down. I don't exactly want it on the surface, even though I know that works, so I usually rod tip down, side twitch..I impact the water a lot with my rod tip unintentionally

Wondering what your favorite fluke rig might look like. Rod, reel, line, weight...

I throw a weightless super fluke on a 7' MH fast action rod with 15lb flouro. I work it tip down and most of the time I twitch it low and slow. 7.1 reel to take up slack when they hit it and come towards me. It works for me, have caught numerous over 7lbs on a fluke.

I powerfish weightless techniques. Agree to MH Fast rod, a faster reel, and work it in heavy grass/pads. I use 15-20 lb line... I do use mono and flouro both. The pinch weight may be your issue on the breaks, crimping a weakness into your line. I use a 3/0 EWG hook...

I use a 6ft 8 inch M/H (4 power) rod, 7.3-1 reel with 15# test Invizx. I use a 3/0 Owner J hook and instead of using a nail weight in the fluke, I use a very light drop shot weight hanging from the hook. That gives the bait a vertical shimmy in the water. I have watched it in a swimming pool and it really looks good set up like that. I use the same set up for throwing weightless Senko type baits but I don't use the drop shot with those. Those have enough weight already. I work both baits with the tip down. Sometimes I use a 3/0 Owner screw lock hook.

I use the same type set up with a (3) power rod, a Gamakatsu round wacky rig hook for wacky rigging a Senko type bait, and I fish it tip down also.

the key to success, this line is almost unbreakable, very strong

I never have fun tieing flouro to braid, the knot seems to slap the guides... however, I've only ever tried this in spinning rods.

Is it much different on a casting rod? What knot?

Any brand names or rod or reel?

I was thinking braid might be a great choice as I was fishing yesterday... even thought about the leader.. that sure would end the stretchy problem on a long distance cast.

The knot will hit the guides on a bait caster also. The knot I use for braid to fluorocarbon or braid to a co-polymer line is the Alberto knot. A double uni knot works also and is pretty easy to tie but it is slightly larger than the Alberto.

Rods I use are a 6ft 10in Power Tackle rod with a Daiwa Tatula reel for Tx. rigging a weightless fluke or Senko and a 683 Powell Max 3D rod, with a Daiwa Steeze reel for throwing a wacky rigged Senko. I use Invizx on both. I don't use braid for throwing weightless baits, but that's just me.

No need for braid to flouro leader on this rig, the braid is too limp for my liking.

I use a 6'8" LMH Kistler Helium, Aldeberan 7.1:1, 12-15 Lbs Pline CXX. Also, I know they look stupid, but I have really fall in love with the Trapper hooks for my flukes - 3/0.

Yep....I use a 7' Medium/fast BPS Tourney Special with a 6.1:1 Abu Revo SX spooled up with 30lb Power Pro braid..... it'll cast a mile, take up slack plenty quick, and the braid helps feel that light bite. The whole rig costs $100 or less.

I use a 6' 8" or 7' MH baitcasting rod and a fast 7:1 or 8:1 reel with 15# fluoro to the bait. I always use a fast ratio reel for soft plastics and/or jigs. Any bait where I may have some slack line between me and the bait I want to be able to pick up the slack fast.

Mono does have a lot more stretch than fluoro but if you are on a budget it may be your best bet. Fluoro is expensive and it has it's own set of issues. It has more memory than mono, it is less forgiving if you nick it, and it costs about 3X what mono costs. One good thing about Fluoro is it sinks so it makes your bait run a little deeper in the water column than mono.

So when you are fishing a Fluke or a Senko, you don't need to add weight to make the bait sink faster than if you were using mono. I can't say how much faster the bait will sink on fluoro than mono but it is noticeable.

Try not to use a pinch on split shot. As mentioned above it can crimp your line and cause it to break. IF you want slightly more weight to the front of your fluke, then use a BLACK BARREL Swivel approx 12" - 14" above the lure. (Too Far up will make the rig difficult to cast and not give the desired sink rate, too close will affect the action of the fluke.) We use a swivel rig and it works great. Even with Straight tail trick worms and senko's. You can also get larger or smaller swivels. (Don't use the SNAP style. Just the barrel swivels). Fluoro can be a "bugger" on Spinning reels. Stick with your Mono. Regular Big Game has always been a reliable one. (You can also use 15lb main line and 12lb on the leader.) But many of the smaller spinning reels don't like mono above 12lb. Also consider using a wide gap 3/0 hook as mentioned above. It gives more plastic/hook separation and allows for a more clean/better hookset. Your basic rig is ok but just needs some "tweeking". If you need more hookset power then a braid main line to a swivel mono leader could give you less stretch.(Loosen your drag slightly.) I don't recommend braid direct to mono/fluoro knot. Very often it will cut and break at the knot. Remember using Braid will also affect the sink rate. Larger (within reason) swivel or even a larger widegap hook or EVEN a SUPERLINE thick wire hook can be used to adjust your sink rate to what you are wanting. Maybe even a clamp on weight to the HOOK will allow the fluke to swim. (Decisions, Decisions, Choices, Choices - Soooooo many technical issues to adjust for! clap)

6'8" MH Fast, Speed Demon 9.3:1 reel, 15# Hi Seas Grand Slam Select, weightless with a 3/0 hook if I can get away with it. If I need to go deeper or if it is very windy, I use the Dangleberry Rig with the sliding weight on the hook shank. And before anyone asks, I am trying to tear up this $70.00 reel & it has been flawless.

Interesting stuff. I do find myself having great success with the "fluke that dies". A little weight on the front sends it into a slow death spiral once I clear a weed edge or a hole in the weeds. I've watched fish hammer it at full speed right then.

I'll certainly go to a 3/0 hook, that's an easy swap. I think I'll give big game a try.

I absolutely hate this halo spinning rod. I bought on a whim on sale at tackle warehouse and the handle and base are gigantic, and very stiff feeling at the base, and that wears your wrist out. It also has tiny guides at the tip, and any line twisty easily wraps the last guide.

I need to run the technique on my johnny Morris reel one time and bps rod and see how that feels.

I've gotten to a point where I like a rod rigged one way for all time. I have my jig rod, my popper rod, my worm rod, my drop shot rod, so forth..
