I love - LOVE fishing for and catching those brown fish, but it occurred to me that I haven't heard much about smallie stocking the last few years.
So i decided to check TPWDs data on state-wide stocking - here is what i found:

I took the last 9 years in 3 chunks of 3 years

From 2009 - 2011, TPWD stocked an average of 347,697 with a high of 511,009 and a low of 219,901
From 2012 - 2014, TPWD stocked an average of 122,314 with a high of 275,025 and a low of 20,225
From 2015 - 2017, TPWD stocked an average of 31,345 with a high of 54,573 and a low of 0 (!!) in 2016

This declining trend doesn't seem to bode well for the future of the bronze jumpers ...

Anyone know why (with actual facts) they have cut back so much on the stocking?
Do we need to form a smallie advocacy group to help influence the stocking policy ... a "Brown Fish Matter" lobby??

Which lake got the biggest/most stocking ? Any local lakes ?

in 09, GV got 103k, Stillhouse got 80k, PK below the dam got 20k, wheeler branch and whitney split up another 15k
in 10, Belton got 289k, gv 112k, whitney 73k, georgetown 35k
in 11, GV got 104k, whitney got 135k and about 5 other lakes got the crumbs

so in that 3 year period they stocked the heck out of grapevine and whitney

in 14 GV got another 100k, and belton picked up 171k

since then the stocking activity has been insignificant.

All told the big winners were grapevine, belton, whitney

Should keep them coming! Pump Gvine full of them

Meh, nothing special about tiny small mouths in Texas.

Doesn't sound like you have tangled with very many Texoma 5 and 6 pounders. I wish they would stock Ray Roberts also.

I have caught a couple of 4 overs at Texoma myself hope they continue stocking them maybe Bridgeport will get some more also.

Been begging for PK to get some but they say no. Caught a lot of 4-5 pound fish years ago and it was a blast.

PK got step childed on this deal. Smallies have always thrived there.

Haven't heard of any caught recently on Whitney

After the golden algae in the early 2000's the smallies there were poof gone, every once in a blue moon you hear of one one being weighed in at a tourney there now last few years but its nothing like its used to be in the 90's. Belton, Stillhouse, and Texoma are your best bets, I've done the best on them at texoma and catch more at stillhouse than belton, but everyone I talk to says beltons has the best population of them?

Yup Lake Belton what I have heard also .

texoma neither ok or tx stock because the population is "self sustaining" according to an ODW biologist report from 2010. makes some sense there. but i just dont get why the statewide stocking has gone to virtually nothing the past few years

Budget cuts? or have other gamefish species stockings gone up to offset the smallmouth? I know they put a big effort into re-stocking whitney in the early 2000's only to have their efforts wiped out by another algae bloom, don't think they bothered stocking any smallies or largemouth for that matter for several years after that.
