Going south to look at a boat from a private seller next week BUT the service center in town is booked solid for about 2-3 weeks so I can't take it in to get the motor scanned? Very interested in the boat nonetheless. I'm gonna get a compression tester so I can at least check that out myself. Any other pointers you might offer engine and electrical-wise?

Look for a small one man shop instead of a service center. They will often stop what they are working on and run tests as it doesn't take that long.

If it's a Merc then there's a whole list of things that need to be done before an accurate compression test can be given.
