I just bought an HDS 10, non-touch unit from Ebay. Chancy, I know, but the price was right because it has a scratched screen, which I can deal with. I've been using an Elite 7 Chirp unit with an HDI transducer, so I was hoping to just plug and go. The Elite unit works fine in both 2D and Downscan.

I plugged in the new unit this afternoon and crossed my fingers. It powered up fine, and the 2D sonar and chart seems to work as far as I can tell in my barn. I'll take it to the lake this weekend t be sure. When I cycle through the pages, there is no downscan page. I thought the downscan would work with the HDI transducer just like it did on my Elite 7. I know I have to get an new transducer for the sidescan to work, but should the downscan work with the HDI skimmer? Or are the downscan and sidescan both "structure scan" that have to have the high-dollar transducer?

One more thing - and I can probably research this and find out, but if someone could answer this it would be handy - on the 2D sonar, I can't get it to show a full screen - the screen is split, even though I do not have the "split screen" option checked.

I need to find out if these issues are user-related or if the unit is bad and I need to return it. I supposedly have 30 days to return it to the Ebay seller.

You will only get 2D sonar with a HDI transducer on the non touch units, no downscan. You should be able to go to pages, sonar and scroll until you see the full screen. After you select the full screen or any other page, you can save it by pressing and holding one of the soft keys.To get downscan and sidescan you will have to use a LSS 1 or 2 box and transducer.

I read your reply again and now I'm a bit confused....Do I need a structure scan box AND either LSS-1 or -2? I thought the structure scan was built into the HDS Gen2 units...

Structure Scan box (LSS-1/2) is required for any image processing (down or side scan). Once you have the box you MAY be able to hook your hdi 'ducer and get down imaging, but just get the big lss 'ducer. It is only built in you Gen2 touch and Gen3

I'm 99% sure the HDS 10 will not work with HDI TD connected to a LSS1/2 box. Reason is, Lowrance didn't include it in the Software options to select it under HDS type in the advanced settings. NOn Touch units use a different version of the software.

You will need both the box and the LSS2 transducer to get sidescan/ downscan.

Auto-Correct messed up a little bit there on me. Yes, JD... The LSS Transducer is required for the box to get all of the functions. But with the last software update the HDI transducers through the box will provide down imaging. The HDS 10, gen 2 will work with both StructureScan boxes. It has to be plugged in, in order for the options to be shown.

That is correct. You will need a LSS1 or LSS2 box and a LSS 1 or 2 transducer. You will also need a ethernet cable to run from the LSS box to your HDS 10. Once it is hooked up correctly the structure scan will show up in pages.

I actually learned this the hard way. I bought an HDI transducer for my HDS 7 up front on the Triton. I didn't get the extra transducer to show down imaging. To get both, I was going to have to buy a sonar module too! Before I began working on that or adding enough transducer cable to reach the box...The boat reminded me it was time to upgrade.

I bet youre zoomed in on the sonar screen. That makes it split. Try zooming out and see if that works.

Replaced my HDS Gen 1 that was hooked to LSS-1 with HDS Gen 2. Hooked to same LSS-1 box and works just fine.
