As of today we have reached what seems to be the tail end of the fall turnover. It's been a bit of an odd process this year as the weather has sort of drug it on while still allowing the fish to bite fairly decent considering. There is tons of very small fish active and even schooling all over the lake in most pockets and creeks. There are some better, decent quality fish hanging out underneath these little fish picking up the scraps as the tired and dead shad fall beneath the school. They are catch-able but you have to slow way down. I've been targeting some of these fish on the tougher days with a wacky rigged LFT Ring Fry and the new Needle Worm. I'm also using the Needle Worm rigged on a drop shot when the wacky presentation doesn't get it done. I'm using either green pumpkin or watermelon red flake colors on these plastics. The key to both of these is to present the bait extremely slow. The other way I'm going about it right now is a two fold approach where I will cover water fast with a 6th Sense Lures Movement 80x crank bait. It's a shallow running, hard thumping crank that is without a doubt the most snag free crank bait that I have ever used. I am using either the shad drone color when the water is a little cleaner or a chartreuse black back when it's off color. Once I have gotten a few bites to clue me in on where they are holding that day I will slow down and can usually get a few bites on a 3/4oz 6th Sense Divine Hybrid Jig in the craw fish drone color with a green pumpkin Berkeley Chigger Craw as the trailer (I promise I'm actually using it not just saying that for the upcoming tournament!). I'm using the heavier jig to induce a reaction bite as it falls quickly past the fish. The areas I'm focusing on for these 2 patterns are typical transition areas where the fish will move in and out from as they transition into the fall patterns. I like to look for quick depth changes like points with steep slopping sides, or where creek channels swing in tight to points or even just the bank. If you're boat can sit in 12ft or so and you can make a short cast to 4ft or less, odds are your in a good area for this.
