Crandall ISD had 34 kids sign up at registration which equals 17 teams. This is great news!! The growth of this sport has really taken off the last 3-5 years in the high school ranks. With that being said, there is a huge demand for boat captains. Unfortunately, the events cannot happen for these kids without these volunteers. If you are interested in helping them please contact me here and I will put you in touch with those responsible for assigning teams.
Here is the schedule for this school year:
September 17 -- Ray Hubbard October 15 -- Tawakoni November 12 -- Lake Fork February 25 -- Lake Tyler March 18 -- Cedar Creek
Regional: April 22 -- Palestine
State: May 20 & 21 -- Ray Roberts

What exactly are the responsibilities of the boat captain, other than providing a boat? Can the captain also fish? Does it matter who runs the trolling motor? Does the captain have any input on where to fish, or what with?

Does the captain have any input on where to fish, or what with? I fished the Fork event last fall. They had a $20 side pot at that event for the boat captains. I entered but just fished away from the target areas where I had the students fishing. They let the students run the trolling motor if you want to let them. I did all the trolling and my crew was good with that. My students had their own equipment. I handed them extra rods rigged what what I thought they could catch fish with when I felt it was the right time. I picked all the spots which were where I thought they could catch them with their skill sets. As boat captain, I basically just played guide all day.

Do they pay gas or is it all just a donation of your time and money? I don't mean that in a poor way, just curious. No way I could help on some of those lakes, but maybe next spring. Coach

Both students gave me $40. One of them offered $60 and I just took 40. We had prefished together the Sunday before the tourney.
They had their parents support as at least one set of family was at the weighin. They were both good kids and were coachable and fun to have in the boat. They had a vehicle and just met me at the lake.
I PM'd Shawn and told him which events I thought I could do as well. This is a huge deal for the kids. I think they had about 250 teams for the Fork event last fall.

As a matter in fact, the Crandall team had a whole block of rooms at the Minnow Bucket, so they were all there the night before getting ready for the tourney with some of the other captains and the team coaches. It was offered that I could have stayed there with the team but I went ahead to the house (45 minutes) to make sure that I got some rest. They were all going out to supper and then socializing after at the Bucket

I've never asked for fuel money at any of the "local" events, however it has been offered.

Like mentioned above, you can do pretty much anything except cast and reel in their fish. You can help cull, net, rig, get them un hung from stuff(it will happen) . Just cannot cast and reel in their catch or contribute to their catch.
The kids can help unload the boat and load. That is the only time they are to drive the big motor and only if they have their boater certificates.
As far as money goes, that is all upon the kids and yourself, lots of them will offer. Some just cannot afford it, most can and will atleast offer. Some take the money and some don't.
It is a lot of fun, some kids have never caught a bass and to see them on the stage and the smiles, it is all worth it.
You will be suprised at the number of parents, grandparents and siblings that are wearing the teams jerseys and supporting them.
Atleast come to a weigh in and visit, you will be blown away.

For those of you considering it, give it a try. I helped my son start a new club at his high school this school year. It's been a lot of work for me and my wife but these kids are very excited and it's worth every minute of my time spent working on it. We are just learning as we go and I'm brand new to it all. We had a gentleman call me and volunteer today and I swear I was beyond excited. I take things as a challenge and I'm determined to get these kids a boat captain. We are still short about two captains but I'm confident we'll get these kids out on the water.
I'm not trying to be political or judge but too many parents don't get involved with their kids in outdoor activities. A lot of kids love the outdoors if given the chance and they have an adult to take them out. High School Fishing is becoming a major event and that's a great thing in my opinion. Try it one time and see how it goes!

They were all going out to supper and then socializing after at the Bucket I captain for Crandall anytime I'm able, almost every HS tournament that comes to Fork and most of the ones on the East TX lakes. It's a good group of kids, with varying skill sets of course. If you guys have the opportunity to captain, I hope you walk away from it with as many great memories as I have. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but it's an opportunity to get some kids in the outdoors and help them win scholarships that will undoubtedly persuade some kids to go to school that otherwise might not have been able to. My understanding is that Crandall still has two teams that need captains for the first tournament of the year at Ray Hubbard (same weekend as Sealy on Fork). Hope to be able to meet some of you guys at these tournaments.

I'll first say I'm very much for this. I do have some questions though. My concern is the liability. It's great they require background checks and proof of insurance, but say there is an accident of some kind. A parent may think the captain was negligent in some way whether they were or not. Does the required liability insurance cover the captain? Has anyone talked to a boat insurance agent to see what liability the captain could be exposed to? A signed waiver may not mean much.
