 Night fishing troubles

Tried my hand at night fishing last night. The water is very stained where I'm fishing. I could hear and see nice fish busting on top but couldn't seem to catch any. I was throwing a black Spro frog and a black R2S Whopper Plopper. Any tips? Thought about throwing a black lizard but didn't know if the fish would see it with the water being so stained and the moon not being out. Any advice would be appreciated. The fish were really shallow in cover that I heard

Arbogast Jitterbug I've experienced this multiple times before and I threw the whole tackle box at them, except for the jitterbug. The next time I experienced it, I threw a jitterbug and had the best night of fishing in my life, all thanks to a jitterbug. I don't know what it is about it but it works really well.

What lake and how long did you fish? I had a night tournament last weekend and talked with some guys who have been doing quite a bit of night fishing lately and they were all telling me they were getting bit better in the 2 to 3 am range. Fishing was pretty tough but I did catch fish on a Black Hilldebrandt spinnerbait 1/2 ounce with gold #6 Colorado blade with Uncle Josh pork trailer and a Berkley 10" Red Shad Power Worm.

Bigger baits tend to work better for me at night. Like mentioned above, the single Colorado blade spinnerbait (they like the big thump)with black skirt and boot tail trailer works, along with big plastics like 10-12 inch worms, magflukes, jigs. Topwater is not as effective for me at night compared to at dawn.
I've caught more fish after 10 pm. Their eyes need to adjust to the low light conditions.

I been fishing a lot at night lately and I've learned a valuable lesson; you don't need black anything to catch bass at night. They will eat whatever color you throw at them. Last weekend, I caught one flipping a SK rage twin tail in watermelon purp/for flk at 11:00 pm. The weekend before that, at Lake Worth, I caught one flipping a baitfish (white/clear sparkle back) colored super fluke at 10:00 pm. Sure black works, I caught my other fish on blk/blue tubes and craws, and purple baby brush hogs. Catching the fish while flipping a fluke at night really drove the lesson home. I don't think bass are using their sense of sight at night as much as their other predatory senses. The top water bite for me has been ok, but that again has been with natural colors, white popper and bream colored whopper plopped. Cranks and rattle traps have been working too but better size coming from flipping cover. Hope this helps give some insight while you fish at night.

I agree with what you are saying regarding colors at night. During the 90's when I was doing a ton of night fishing I caught fish on just about every color lure you could imagine. But I did get with some really good anglers on Fork who told me that especially during really bright full moon nights black was the one color that showed up better. The silhouette against the bright background stood out better which proved for my fishing to make a difference sometimes and the real reason I still stay with black especially with a spinnerbait. It is also a matter of confidence. In 10" worms I won't get away from a Red Shad worm because it has been my best producer through the years but my brother will not throw anything but Blue Fleck. The guy I drew for our tournament last weekend literally caught over 30 fish during the night on shad colored crankbait.

Tbass, you're probably right about the full moon. If and when I happen to be out during a full moon I'll do some experimenting. The few times I night fished at Fork it was during a new moon phase.

Even in the Daytime in the muddiest of water and fish will feed.. At night a fish will use there lateral line more to feed than their eyes.. A bait will move water and a fish will find it.. Bigger Baits move more water.. Single Colorado Spinner Baits work good and big Worms.. I have thrown a Triple Ratle Back Jig with a Hawg Craw on the back.. People look at at and say your crazy that is too big.. Try it and find out.. Have a good rod, big line and hold on..

I was just thinking this same thing. I have a buddy who tosses the BIG 7 inch jitterbug, and he whoops up with it!

Didn't try the black buzzbait. I'll have to try that Use a black zoom toad as the trailer. It gives them a bigger target and allows you to fish it slower.

Its all about water movement I throw watermelon red plastics at night a catch fish but you want something that moves alot of water like the V&M Wild Thang worm is excellent at night.

I'll agree with the lateral lines but don't underestimate their eyesight at night. I've nearly lost several rods from having the bait hanging over the side of the boat a foot or so in the air and them see it and come out of the water to grab it. Funny thing is, they were top water lures and they wouldn't touch them in the water but let one hang....
