posted this in the tow vehicle section with no response.

Took my truck into the dealership today to see what's up. Coming back from Toledo Bend a few weeks ago it would not shift into drive. Was running in tow/haul. Took it to the transmission shop and they couldn't find any problems. It wont act up unless I am towing. The dealership said they will hook up to a trailer and try to get it to act up. I hope so. It's a 2010 half ton Z71 with 90,000 miles. Anyone else run into this before?

May have sensed a heavy load or overheated and went to tow/haul mode to protect itself. Look into putting a trans cooler on it for our hot Texas weather

Would require way more info that you'll be able to give anyone online to help you even if they knew how. 2 shops have had it in person amd are still scratching their heads, so...your limited description not going to get any definite answers over the internet. Sorry for your troubles.

Hopefully its something simple and cheap. When you say won't shift into drive you mean you physically cant get it to shift to drive or you mean you shift to drive and it doesnt actually engage the drivetrain and move? Does shifting to other gears have any effect?

You don't have the truck at this point so it isn't like anyone could wall you through any sort of troubleshooting anyways even if you were able... And assuming you were that able, it wouldn't be at a trans shop/dealership. No offense intended... Just come from years of professional wrenching and repair facility service work and know how frustrated people can get hemselves trying to diagnose blindly over the internet and listen to random clueless strangers because they lack basic fundamental knowledge and trouble shooting skills to even determine is other peoples' anecdotal experience is relevant in any way.

I hope they find it quickly. Intermittent issues are always the roughest though, hipe you get a good tech that gets it beat for you quickly. Hang in there!

ok. it only got up to 205 degrees. the dealer said that was within tolerances. I was running in tow haul and at 60-65 mph it was running around 3600 rpm. I will check on the cooler though, that would be a good investment with the heat. thanks

Cooler never hurts, but wouldn't have anything to do with the truck not shifting into drive. 205* is 100% normal right now given current ambient temps.

Can you elaborate on the actual problem or concern with the vehicle?

Thanks. I'm not sure its in the transmission but maybe they will figure it out. It works fine not towing so that's the frustrating part. Just purchased the truck so that adds to it. It will go down the road just wont shift as it should to a higher gear out of passing gear when it down shifts. Hopefully they can get it fixed. I am mechanically inclined except for all the electronics now days on the new ones. no offence taken on your response. just wondered if someone might have had the same problem. Thanks again.
