I'm trying decide on which shaft length I want and needing some insight on yall's preference. I currently have a 42" but in big waves it's pretty pointless. Does the 52" make a world of difference or is it in the way most off the time?

Mine has not been in the way. Makes a world of difference. However, I'm 6'6" and run a basscat. I stand closer so casting over it is not an issue.

If you like fishin out in open water when it gets rough, the 52 is the better option unless you just like the trolling motor bouncing out of the water.

An extra 10 inches should handle pretty much anything. If that's not enough, you're in trouble...

The best trolling motor shaft length is really impacted by the model boat you are running. I had always ran 52 inch shafts on older Skeeters and Champions. A 45 is perfect for the Ranger Z520C I am running now because the boat sits so much flatter. A trolling motor that is unnecessarily long will be an inconvenience and/or in the way.

Check with guys that have the same boat as you have or post your boat model here.

No question - 52" is a no brainer. If you like to fish deep at all on any lakes of size the 52 will keep your prop in the water under most conditions...the 45 will NOT.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Go with the 52" shaft. You'll be happy with it in the end.

Another vote for the 52". I've had them on my last 3 boats and I always have it lowered all the way down. I can count on 1 hand how many times I have had to raise it up.
