What is this lure imitating? I know bass are opportunists and I have caught a lot of fish on them...how do you pick your colors....for water clarity or are you trying to match the bait? My favorite colors are anything black with some type of flake.I normally fish the 5" but thinking of trying larger to keep smaller fish from hitting.

I'm not sure it looks like anything imparticular, it's just an action and profile they find appealing. Colors are picked according to time of year and water clarity, clearer warmer water gets more natural colors..watermelons and pumpkins. Dirty colder water get either some version of whites or black w/ fleck.

Green Pumpkin works anywhere....anytime.....period. Always have a few bags of them.

They imitate what you make them imitate. When I use them, which is almost every trip to the water, I pop em like a jerk bait. Slow drag em. Lift and drop em....whatever it takes to get bit. If you pop em like a jerk bait it looks like a bait fish. The lift and drop looks like a bait fish. The slow drag imitates a craw (???). I guess. Whatever it is....to the bass.....they can't resist it. Green pumpkin looks like a bluegill. And the color is easy for them to see. Bass are far more sensitive to greens. They can see it like I see a Big Mac at a sushi bar.

You can make it do a few things but it was designed to mimic one thing - a dying baitfish that is fluttering to the bottom. And that came from Gary Yamamoto's mouth. It's that "shimmy" on the fall when rigged weightless that the bait was made to do. All of the rest is a bonus. I fished at Gary's place last year and was lucky enough to have this conversation with him. It was eye opening. And not that I did much before, but now I virtually never use a weight with a senko. I rig them either weedless or wacky.

I use plain white ones 90% of the time. A 5" white one looks just like a dying shad slowly falling to the bottom, and bass can't pass up that opportunity.

BTW the larger ones don't work the same as the 5". They still catch fish but not near as many.

Yep. Anytime you're struggling it seems like you can always get bit on a Senko.

Lift and drop.... My 10 yr old nephew spanked me one day doing this... Catching 2 to my every one from the back of the boat. Later I figured out the difference. He had mono and I had fluorocarbon. We were only fishing 2 ft deep and my fluorocarbon was sinking, causing the senko to drag instead of lifting it.

I do have a couple of favorite colors in several brands of Senko type baits and a lot of the time I choose colors based on water clarity and if it is sunny or cloudy. Green pumpkin/purple is one of my favorites. I throw Yum Dingers and Yamamoto Senkos the most when I am wacky rigging them. If I tx. rig one weightless then I use a Hyper stick, Snake-O, or a Pocket Rocket. I use the 5 inch model most of the time.

I never used to use them very often, but I started at some point just throwing them weightless when the bite got tough, and I have caught a lot of fish on those things. I definitely prefer the original Senkos to all other brands

Bass are getting use to them now just like all other baits that come by them 100 times in one day.

Try this little trick to make it do the dance.
- Fish it with no weight in front.
- Stick a ribbed nail in the tail.
- Ribbed nail is better than lead nail. Ribs are larger seeping it in-tack.
- I usually leave the head on the nail.
- When is sets down tail first on rocks it makes one TAP.
- Use the slight lift and fall method.
- Use mono line because it floats and will allow the senko to stand vertical before falling over. Go light line 12 lb.
- Bait fish that are dying on the bottom stand Vertical. Bass love it.
