A recent fish was caught from Roberts that may or may not be a Mean Mouth. This raises a question in my mind. If Ray Roberts has Mean Mouth then what size limit is used? Is it like a spotted bass and there is no size limit or is it like a small mouth and must be 14"? Does any one know?

If it is in fact a meanmouth, it's a separate species that isn't regulated in Texas (at least as far as I know they aren't) and thus will have no minimum length or bag limit. But - I imagine that'll change quickly if it is a meanmouth.

It might be easier to go to straight 14" min on roberts if their is indeed 4 species of bass. That takes the guess work out of it

Any tournament I have fished with them always went of the bigger off the 2 fish minimum size. Normally that is the smallmouth.
FYI I've been saying for months those were mostly mean mouth in ray roberts not true smallmouth.

FLW always considered them to fall under the spot size limit when we were at Beaver. Bill Taylor said if they have a rough spot on there tongue he considered them to be a spot. Not that I usually agreed with him but that's the way he handled it.

That depends which year at beaver. I've fish 2 and it was handled both ways. I was referring to how it was handled at Chickamauga.

Unless you're sure it is a spot, a tooth patch would be the easiest way to get rid of the majority of the doubt, consider it a black bass (non-spot). Go with the limit of either smallmouth or largemotuth (if they are different) based on the best guess of the primary species. Or just go with the most restrictive to be safe..

I fished the tour for 6 yrs and at beaver that's how it always was but that could have been bc of state laws and different Chickamagua! Beaver was the first place I had ever seen mean mouth. The state record was caught in one of the flw's when we were there. I think it was 5 something at the time.

I don't think there has ever been a confirmed meanmouth in the state of Texas. So if it is, it's the first of its kind here.

At beaver it was 12 on spots but the smallmouth and largemouth was 15 but I think they have changed that now

I don't know how you can say there has been no confirmed Mean Mouths in Texas. I have been married to one for 44 yrs.

I don't think there has ever been a confirmed meanmouth in the state of Texas. So if it is, it's the first of its kind here. I've never heard of one being certified in Texas. Lots of claims but no real proof. . .yet. I knida hope they are meanmouth, a little diversity never hurt a lake.
