Usually it kindof works itself out. I close a rodlocker on a rod, the cost of fixing the reel outweighs the cost of a new one, etc. As long as it doesn't drive me nuts to use it I keep it in use.

like rx said. never as long as they are still working or repairable.
when something new comes along that is better and affordable the old stuff goes in the shop maybe to be sold but in most cases not.
Then they are more likely given away when someone, old or young, says they can't do this or that because they don't have a rod or reel.

I like my 10+ year old equipment. I try and buy used stuff that is the same so I can use as spare parts.

That's why I will not buy another rod that doesn't have a lifetime warranty. It's a little higher but s#% happens.

I use rods and reels until they break beyond repair. Robbery was the only reason I "replaced" a bunch of rods and reels at once.

If it works don't fix it. My favorite rod was new in the mid eighties.

If anyone has rods/reels that they are "phasing out" and you happen to be interested in a trade for some very lightly used standard issue military clothing (I got it all, ACU pattern and some multi-cam) OR AR15 (M16) accessories, contact me via PM and we can work a trade I am mostly looking for a medium action spinning rod and a medium action bait casting rod/reel, but I might be convinced to trade for some other stuff too I have pants, jackets, hats, boots (brandnew Afghanistan style combat boots), sweat wicking shirts, boonie caps, cold weather gear (mostly insulating items worn under outer garments), Magazine pouches, accessory pouches and a ton of other stuff... if it isnt on that list, and you are looking for it, let me know

I can't seem to part with my old Ambassadeurs and old green Curados. The only things I've upgraded lately is some older rods. The reels still perform as new.

I still have one 5500c in my line up, but all my pistol grip rods are on racks in the garage.
Some old graphs, flashers and stuff hanging around.
I don't just buy a bunch of new stuff every year just to replace all the old, but I do upgrade a couple of rods and reels a year, and the older stuff gets put on less commonly used set-ups.

I still use out of date reel if they feel good I your hand use them.
The things I would recomend updating is electronics and rods.
I have gone to St Croix V series rod thet we have built.
I will never use low end rods for worming and jigging any more.
The high end rod are worth the money because of their sensitivity.
Their are alot of good equipment out their.
Dont get caught up in a fad try a freind's stuff and spend your money wizely.
One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!

I buy good equipment and get quite attached to it. I feel like I've lost an old friend when I have to retire it. Shimano!
