My mom and other relatives have kitchen sets and they swear by them. The company claims they will sharpen your knife for you the whole life of the knife. They also say that they are very sharp and stay sharp for a very long time even when cleaning hundreds of fish. But they are $190

Are they worth the $$$?

You would have to send it off to them to have to have it sharpend may take awhile and for the price I say just get an electric knife

I have the one that you can extend the blade on and the sheath turns into a fish grip. It is a great knife and yes it holds an edge very good. I do not think and filet knife will last hundreds of fish without sharpening. I sharpen mine myself. I would recommend it to anyone. Yes they are expensive but they are not $190. Who ever is pricing it for you is way out of line. I have had mine for probably over 15 years and I think I paid around $60 then but now on Cutco website it is $90.

Yes that's the same one I was talking about. There was a rep at Costco selling them and quoted me $190. Maybe the lifetime sharpening by him was included...I don't know. But it's a lot more then the $90 they are selling for online.

Get a Mundial filet knife. They are real good. Super sharp and hold a edge a long time.

I have a Cutco fillet knife my dad had sent in and factory resharpened and he built a custom handle and sheath for it and gave it to me. It holds a sharp blade very well and is outstanding to me. I use it on red fish regularly and it cuts right thru the thick scales with no issues at all. I also have a electric fillet knife I love so the two together are all I need. I recommend Cutco knives.

Buy the Dexter Russell fillet knife for about $15, every fillet station on the coast has someone who charges to clean fish by the lb. That's what they use - no electric fillet knifes. They are cheap, durable and hold an edge, then get you one of the knife sharpeners at Northern Tool it's their model number WSKTS. They come with 3 different grades of grit sandpaper belts, get you some extra belts while you are there. They will sharpen your knife surgically sharp. they knife sharpener costs about $80 with tax - you will be a hero of hero's around the house. Until your wife cut's her thumb - I'm telling you these knife sharpeners are awesome. I keep two knives in a fish cleaning kit, in case I have to clean 50 fish. Take the money that is left over from your $190 Cutco fillet knife and buy you a good cleaning board and a plastic tub for the fillets to soak in iced water while your cleaning. Use the plastic tub as your catch all storage for all your fish cleaning necessities - You will thank me!

Cutco makes a good knife but they are way overpriced for knives with plastic handles and 440A steel. Another downside is that you have to send their serrated knives in to the factory for sharpening.(Cutco is owned by Ka-Bar)

Some sound advice from David - there is a reason you see more Dexter Russell knives than any other kind on commercial fishing docks and restaurant kitchens. They are reasonably priced, durable, and aren't hard to keep an edge on.

I have discovered on trial and error that my favorite filet knife is a moderately price and quality serrated steak knife

A Dexter or Rapala filet knife are both great knives for the money and keep a razor sharp edge!

I have one of the Cutco's. It is an ok knife I have used it. It doenst hold an edge any better than most other knifes. I would not buy another, get a dexter russel and a steel and learn how to use both.

I have one Dexter Russell knife and a Work Sharp sharpener. I cleaned approximately 60 fish last night. Sharpened before I started and then used a steel every few and stopped about half way through to resharpen and finished up without any problem.

I have had a Cut Co for over 16 years, great knives for the kitchen and their outdoor knife is a good one for dealing with hogs. I have sent mine off and had them resharpen it, and I have resharpened myself. After a dozen name brand fillet knives and 3 high end electric knives, I only carry 1 knife now. A Bubba Blade, for fresh or saltwater fish nothing has come close. I have filleted white perch, ( crappie to folks not from the south), bass, redfish, ling and Tuna, with the same knife. Less muscle required than the electric, no power source needed. Fish bones are nothing. Thought it was A GIMMICK, it aint. Just looks awkward and big. I did not use their fillet, just the original.

Have one it was a gift . Not worth it !

Funny, I have had the filet knife for a number of years and I love it. It's my go to knife for freshwater and small saltwater fish. I like the stone on the sheath and I keep it razor sharp.
