I am thinking that I should take the wheel off and build a little dam around spray Penetrating oil and let it sit for awhile. Not sure I want to apply heat because of the seals. Any other ideas?

You could try a cordless 3/8 drive impact with an Allen wrench socket. Make sure and wedge the hub so it doesn't spin. I feel for you any method your only likely to get one shot at it. However if necessary you could drill and recap a new set screw. Good Luck

Kroil first, a couple of applications. Then a stob of an allen wrench that fits and tap tap tap with a small hammer. Kroil it again and tap it the next day. Then a prayer and try to remove it.

the problem I have with drilling is metal filings in the hub

Never heard of Kroil so I did some research. Kroil vs. PB Blaster threads are like Ford vs Chevy.

Kroil is good stuff. Its on every Gunnys bench. I dont know exactly what youre working on, but if it will fit in a bucket, kerosene and ATF will soak it loose, guaranteed.

I t is a set screw on the axle hub. I wont be soaking it. I will have to build a dam around it and cover the screw with Kroil or PB Blaster. Will probably be PB unless I can find Kroil local. I was headed to Buchanann this weekend but that may be off so may have a chance to work on it. I just want to check the oil in the hub. No leaks so I am sure it is fine. I had a leak on the front one but it turned out the set screw was not snug.

On an axle I would hit that little sucker with a propane torch. The axle is a great heat sink. Add wet rags around the set screw and heat it up.

thought about it but the hub has rubber seals so need to be careful with the heat.

An oxy/acet torch is the proper tool. Small hot flame will heat the screw and threads quickly without spreading. Wrap wet rags around the axle exposing only the set screw area. Keep the rags wet. Get a dull red, take it out, check the lube level, put it back using silver or nickel anti seize. Go fishing. Dont sweat the seals, the water will carry away the heat. This is an old A/C man trick.

After searching the internet for probably close to an hour I found the replacement hub that I need. Trailer has the same hubs (UFB) that Ranger uses. For $100 I can get a new hub with rotor. If I have to replace it I would at least get a new rear seal and probably the bearing buddy. My buddies are too cloudy to see through. I put some 75w-90 oil in the idler. I know the Ranger hubs call for 50w. I really don't think the heavier oil will hurt especially in summer. I will probably change the oil in the front one when I wrap up with the rear. I could only soak it for 4 hours and it was a no go. I figured out how to make dam to hold the oil. Next weekend I plan to soak at least 1-2 days.
