I value the knowledge on this forum that i've been a part of for many years. So I ask now for more knowledge before I make a decision. I have a 18.4 ' Champion Bass Boat that has provided many years of performance powered by an old 150 hp XP Evinrude engine ! Its time for change and this old engine needs to be laid to rest ! My Dad' who passed years ago' always ran Mercury engines and loved them. As a kid- I also ran these engines as he taught me boating etc. - To get to the point- I'm ready to re-power my Champion with a Mercury engine but needed some advice to these simple questions. #1 Mercury Pro XS ? #2 Mercury Optimax ? #3 2 Stroke vs 4 Stroke.? Any advice and recommendations are appreciated. PRO And Cons will be appreciated as well . Thanks Rio

My stringer is getting there!!

I have an mercury pro xs and really happy with it. Had one on my other boat also and never had any problem either but I did a service every year as I do now. I change my water pump and lower unit and filters every year and what ever else I need to do. Plugs every 2 years.

Well, others may have some better knowledge than I do, but here's what I know off the top of my head: I believe the Pro XS is the "high performance" model, I think I heard they have less warranty and drink more gas than the optimax, but that they're really great fast motors. The optimax on the other hand had more warranty and better gas economy but just a hair less performance. Still very great motor though. Personally if I was repowering I'd probably just stick with optimax. Also I believe 2 stroke engines are lighter and more of the choice for bass boats over 4 strokes? That's my 2 cents

pro xs and the xs(racing division) are the same engine. use the same fuel, etc. only difference is the limiter on a xs is higher than a pro xs. that being said.. they both make peak power at the same rpm. 6050

on your boat, get the PRO XS !!! it will do all you want.
also, id recommend the smart craft gauge kit as well.. it tells you everything in one neat little gauge pkg. well worth
the money!!

4 stroke??? yukola. (not a fan of the merc 4 strokes.. yet)

get an 8 inch plate and a pro xs, with smart craft... and let er rip!!!
