Last time I had boat out it ran great, forgot to plug in charger....6 weeks later I take out boat and it barely cranks but starts and runs good, later that day tach stops working and cranking battery is dead so I hook motor plus and minus to a trolling battery and it starts, runs good, tach works. Go to dock and shut down, restart to load on trailer and no tach but loads on trailer ok. Go home, charge batteries (hooked back to cranking battery) took out today and fires right up but no tach, bogs a little on takeoff then runs ok, shut down and fish a bit then restart ok, tach works for a couple seconds and stops working, motor has no power under load but limps back to ramp and onto trailer.
Did I lose a power pack or stator?

Sounds more like Stator trying to go out, yup, have spark at all 6 plugs so I think power paks are ok, doesn't look like it is charging.

Check all of the stator connections at the rectifier. This model doesn`t have a regulator and the rectifier may have gone south. #17 here: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mercury/V-150-XR-2/4868998%20THRU%200A904645/Wiring%20Harness%2C%20Starter%20Solenoid%20and%20Rectifier/parts.html

The rectifier will kill the switch boxes and cause it to act up

Thanks, I have a new rectifier coming in today, this one is the original so I figured I'll go ahead and replace it and go from there....

I think she is good again! While waiting on the new rectifier to be delivered I pulled the wires off the old one and a couple wires including the tach wire were a bit corroded so I cleaned them up and reinstalled and started motor on the muffs.....still no tach and motor was not as peppy as usual. New rectifier arrived as I was running it so I swapped it out and BOOM tach works and motor sounds great again. Won't know for sure till I put it in the water but since the tach works and it sounds and revs like its old self I'm pretty optimistic it will run good. I was trying out a 23p Tempest and 23p Yamaha M when the tach stopped working and I couldn't get over 5000 rpm with either at first, then it dropped to 2000 rpm max so I'll retest them if the motor is running good and hopefully one of them will work out and I will get it fine tuned. The 22p Quicksilver 2000 was turning about 200 rpm too much at 6200 rpm WOT before I tried the 23p props....

Well, part of the problem is fixed.... tach works and battery is charging after replacing rectifier. Ran a little better, 4000 rpm for one run, then back to 2000 rpm max after that. Ordered a DVA for my multimeter and will check stator and switchboxes next....

High side of stator has gone out. Sometimes they will come in and out like flipping a switch or just fail all at once

That stator is 21 years old, I guess it is due for a change.....

new stator is on, lake test ran 5000-5200 rpm with 23p yamaha prop I am trying out, pretty sure it is too much prop for my old 2.0 liter. Started bogging and missing some after a bit, more like fuel and not electrical, still would run 4000-5000 rpm. Primer bulb is new and felt good but I pumped it anyway and motor took off so I figured too much water in separator or bad filter, possible fuel pump but it ran pretty good for 30 minutes after I pumped it...
Got home and decided to change spin on water separating fuel filter and SURPRISE!! filter was very loose, not even hand tight, not enough to leak fuel but definitely enough to suck air. My guess is that pumping bulb cleared air out of system for a bit...I hope. Changed filter anyway and started up good on the hose, now time for another lake test, probably with a different prop...
