The other day my tilt and trim finally gave up. It has been weak despite cleaning the connections in the engine and testing on multiple batteries. Therefore, I have narrowed it down the the motor and so did the mechanic/fisherman at the boat ramp who helped me manually lift the motor on the transom saver. Well I'm not a certified mechanic, but I'm pretty handy working on electrical/engine work on boats and vehicles. Apparently since "they don't make those motors anymore," he said i have to buy a whole new tilt/trim system for 1200-1400 plus labor. However, when pulling the original tilt/trim motor it matches several products I have found on amazon and eBay. Has anyone ran into this problem and if so could I just replace the motor? I'm thinking, since he is a mechanic, he uses factory parts and doesn't use aftermarket/ off brand replacements.

You can get just the motor for the tilt trim unit. I replaced one a couple of years ago on a 91 Merc. I got mine from dbElectrical.com Dont know if they would have one to fit yours or not. It is not that hard to do. On mine you had to take the left transom bracket off to get to the motor. The whole process is in a Seloc manual. If I still had mine, I would scan it for you. Let it go with the boat.
