I need some expert advise on painting the bottom of a pontoon boat that is going to be used in saltwater. This boat will be a work boat and will be on and off the trailor almost daily. Not so worried about barnicals but sure worried about the corriosion aspects of saltwater. Already removed the carpet from the bunks and painted them with an oil based paint so as not to retain water. Sooooo, what do you guys recommend?

The purpose of bottom paint is to retard the growth of barnacles and has little benefit on a boat that is trailered. Your best defense against saltwater damage is a fresh water rinse and a lot of corrosion-X.

The anodes is the right answer.
Painting would be a waste of time.

Pat, is electrolysis a problem on an aluminum boat just from being used in salt water. I always thought that you had to be plugged into shore power for that to happen.

I started getting the white powder of death on my scooter a couple of years ago, no idea why or how, put an anode inside the tunnel and that ended that.

I'll have to look into putting one on my Seaark. I have a small bracket on the transom that was put on as a step that I can attach to without drilling into the hull.

Pretty cheap and painless insurance. I have no idea how the creeping death started on mine, everything is grounded back to the motor, but regardless the anode stopped it cold, thank goodness.
