I seem to have trouble with Teleflex steering cables every 4-5 years or so, they just start to get hard to steer and I have to replace them. They are double cables on a 150 Evinrude and I just think they should last much longer than that. Does anyone have a similar experience with theirs?
Thanks,
Bobby

Go hydraulic and never go back.

Are you putting grease on them? That's your problem. NEVER put grease on a cable, it cakes up and causes them to bind up.

Pull the cables out of the motor, use carb cleaner and penetrating oil, to break the old grease up, wipe and clean until that old gunk is gone, then ONLY use something light like penetrating oil, silicone, or lithium to lube them. They'll last a very very long time.

A shotgun cleaning kit works great for this. Use the bronze brush with cleaner to loosen the crud in the tilt/trim trim tube then run patches with solvent through it until it's as clean as you can get it.
The cable is probably sealed on both ends so you can't grease it. The problem is most likely in the trim/tilt tube.

I've never used grease on them and they are sealed except the outer ends of the cables.I've always cleaned them and put a light coat of 3 in 1 oil. They seem to be freezing up further up inside the cables. I guess there is nothing else I can do except consider hydrolic steering, just hate to spend that much on a 13 year old boat.

Thanks guys...!

I have Morse cables on mine. I have one that is started to bind a little so I pulled a receipt from the last one I bought. It was 1993. I quit greasing them a long time ago. I turn the motor to expose the cable and clean with WD40. I then use silicone spray to lube after wiping the WD 40 off.

+1, the difference in price from changing the cables to hydraulic steering is between 400-500. Money well spent.

I learned a trick from an old man that I did every 2 years on my steering cables. It was to pressurize the cables with WD40 and Mystery Oil. Doing that I never had to replace them again. PM me your # and I will explain what he did. It would be hard to explain by typing.
