running a 25hp Yamaha on a jon boat, and it died in the middle of running across the lake last night, as it began to spit and sputter before it completely died. It would only run when I held the gas can up in the air, and the gas pushed down through gravitational pull. I assumed that the gas line/pump between the 3 gallon gas tank and the motor had a hole in it, so I bought a brand new one from Academy and replaced it. I decided to go ahead and replace the fuel filter as well while I was at it. I started it, and it ran for all of 5 seconds before it died again, and acted just like it did on the water.

I'm at a loss for what could be going on...............any wisdom someone could divulge?

well guys..........new plugs, new line from gas tank to motor, new fuel filter.....

pulled the "out" flow line off of the fuel pump and pumped the primer bulb........no gas came out at all, only air with substantial pressure. The guy at the outboard shop told me to do this, and if no fuel came out, that the pump was bad.......my thought is that if air is coming out with substantial pressure, but not gas, then not enough fuel is getting to the fuel pump...........but i'm no mechanic.

What are your thoughts?

Mash the bulb, put your finger over the out, let off of the bulb repeat till you get fuel at the out port. If you do not get fuel to it after 4 or 5 attempts the quick connect at the tank is restricted or the fuel pickup in the tank has problems.

Thank you Gary..........I did what you said, and there was absolutely no gasoline whatsoever that came out.

So I guess the gas tank needs to be replaced and we will see from there.............thoughts?

Just a heads up when buying primer bulbs make sure you buy a quality bulb, atwwod is not quality, I see brand new ones from Academy and Walmart that will not pump unless you point the arrow straight up
As for fuel line do not use a fuel line with a liner, even though they say B1 and is EPA complant they are wrong . it deteriates and collapses
I see this all the time at my shop
