My buddy is having 2 major problems.
#1. On occassion and sometimes often, when getting on plane the motor boggs down. I figure either to much or not enough fuel. The funny thing is, when it does it inorder to straighten it out he has to put it in reverse and rev the engine a few times. You can hear when its corrected so he then puts it in foward and away we go. Sometimes, this procedure must be done more than once.
#2 Sometimes the DA#$% thing just wont start. The bindex on the starter makes contact with the flywheel but will just sit there and the starter will hummmmmm. Using a jump box works sometimes but not always. Like last night.
Any IDEAS???????????????

I'm inclined to beleive its low fuel pressure from the mechanical fuel pump. And as far as the starter humming and not turning the flywheel, Look at the starter drive gear. they have a rubber clutch that is spinning, probably coming from putting WD-40 on it.........mike

He had a bad oil leak from the cap on his oil tank. I bet thats what screwed the starter up. Is there anyway to test the fuel pump and what should be done to the starter?. The oil leak is fixed now. Thanks for your input.

When you take off and it bogs down, squeeze the primer bulb. If it takes off, you have a fuel problem.

I had a similar starter problem with my 95 200 EFI while out on Amistad. Went by the 2 Guys shop in Del Rio they gave me a can of Marvel Mystery Oil and worked it a bit with a screw driver and been fine ever since. Shaft is probably gummy from the oil leak clean it and lube it properly and it should work just fine.
When in doubt SET THE HOOK!

The oil leak may be the culprit on the running also. Might need to clean area under flywheel. The ignition trigger may not be advancing (sticking) on throttle up. Will require pulling the flywheel to get it cleaned up. Good Luck
