I was running at about 4,200 RPMs on Saturday when all of a sudden the motor sounded like it had popped into neutral because it revved real high. An alarm started going off and I quickly turned the motor off. Now it won't start and it makes a loud popping noise out of the lower unit that sounds like a gun shot. It's a 1998 Mariner 150hp. I plan to take the boat in to have my boat guy take a look, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas what the issue may be?

When you say a loud popping is it like a back fire or a metal clunk....OPTI

Check your flywheel cant remember the year late 90's early 2000's but they had a rash of flywheel nuts backing off and flywheel would pop up and jump time not saying that is what is but if it is back firing it is out of time. Or one other possible thing is the bia circuit in switch boxes the bia circuit is what controls the timing and keeps it steady.....OPTI

'98 150 efi is a 2.5... no way flywheel can do that on those unless a bunch a splines go south either in flywheel or on tha crank................

Believe me it can happen I got a crank with the splines tore up and it also trashed the stator and flywheel Nut back of just enough that the flywheel jumped the splines I did a couple back in the early 2000's...OPTI
