Was looking for Ethanol free gas stations tonight. I thought Lee's Oil Co. in Alvin had E-free gas. I looked on line and saw they sold 93 Octane E-Free gas. I have a 2011 Merc.150 OptiMax burning this garbage we have now. This gas is supposed to be 87% Oct. So the question is...will 93% be bad for the engine.

Run what is recommended, just don't allow it to set in the tank. Use it or transfer to your vehicle and burn it there.
Yes..running 93 octane in a motor not designed for it could be harmful. Cylinder pressures being equal, 93 burns slower, leaving more soot and carbon deposits which can foul plugs and ring lands.

BTW: I tried to call that Bu-cees in Lake Jackson on Oyster Creek Drive. The automated answer refers you to www.bu-cees.com and fill out a questionaire regarding your situation. I just did that wanting to know what octane E-Free gas they have. Bu-cees Reply: They do carry 87 Octane E-Free gas. In my reply, I recommended putting a couple of pumps on line at the Texas City Bu-cees. Waiting on that reply now.

Some of the Murphys (walmart) gas stations have started to carry 87 ethanol free, it's about .50 more a gallon; but I don't care.

I'm driving over to Weatherford,Tx to Walmart/Murphy's to buy 87 octane Ethanol free gas for boat. Ive got a 52 gallon tank on my 98' Tr20. Its for my 94' Merc200Xri. Maybe a pita but worth it to me to not have ethanol issues to contend with!

Yes..running 93 octane in a motor not designed for it could be harmful. Cylinder pressures being equal, 93 burns slower, leaving more soot and carbon deposits which can foul plugs and ring lands. This! Higher octane in an engine designed for low octane also makes less power since it burns cooler as well as slower. In order to burn higher octane, timing should be advanced to help increase the burn rate. Heat is power. Another way to look at it is running high octane in a low octane engine is akin to retarding the timing.

Cornell ecologist's study finds that producing ethanol and biodiesel from corn and other crops is not worth the energy! In terms of energy output compared with energy input for ethanol production, a Cornell University and University of California-Berkeley study found that: -corn requires 29 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced; -switch grass requires 45 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced; and -wood biomass requires 57 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced. In terms of energy output compared with the energy input for biodiesel production, the study found that: -soybean plants requires 27 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced, and -sunflower plants require 118 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced. http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/July05/ethanol.toocostly.ssl.htmlAlso, it takes lots of water to make ethanol, about 3 gallons of water per gallon of ethanol. And finally, the US Government uses our tax money to subsidize ethanol fuel. I think it is around $.51 per gallon. This money comes out of our paychecks and bank accounts or is borrowed from the Chinese and our kids get to pay it and with interest. Ever feel like you are being screwed?

Update your investigation Muzzle. There are no subsidies for ethanol today and its still cheaper than gasoline. Your study dated back to the year Congress mandated RFS. That needs to be adjusted to current technology and fuel uses with current new technologies lowering ethanol use but the data you site does not pertain to today's reality.
Using the best manufacturing processes E10 is between 30 and 60 percent cleaner burning than straight gas.
