I do not have a jack plate on my boat but was considering adding one. Then after thinking about it, I don't really know what they add. Can someone tell me what I will get out of adding one please? I may be wrong but wouldn't I also have to change the cables out as well? I have an older Ranger 1990, with an older 150 (also 1990)on it. Runs pretty good right now so not sure about this.

depends on the model of that boat.

most of those year ranger boats increase all around performance with a 6" plate.

i used to run a 90 481V with a 150 on it.. many years ago. i ran a 10" plate on it, but it broke the
transom.. repaired it and put a 6" on it.. didn't loose but 1 to 2 mph vs the 10.

My 90 482v started life with a 2.4 150hp and ran 53mph. When I got it I swapped the block for a hotrod 220hp that'd run 65mph with a 6" plate. But I had to run a 4 blade prop to lift the bow and lost top end. I Went to a 10" picked up a 24 fury and was running right at 70mph with a 3 blade and never had any issues for years.
Now I run a 240hp 2.5 on a 12" paralift jackplate (Hydraulic) up at almost 80 on GPS.
The 10" is where it was at for my boat, I am contemplating going back to a standard 10"plate.

See that lift? when was the last time you saw an old Ranger run like that?

Not the same view but you can see from the splash for a heavy old Ranger it is flying.

But like Steve said Model makes a huge difference!
