Looking at a boat with a 98 200ho Mercury EFI, but the oil injection system is messed up. Wondering the ballpark cost on replacing it?

Not sure. It's on a boat I'm looking at. The guy selling it says his mechanic said it would be around $350 to fix. Just would like to know worse case what could it cost?

So what would it cost if the gear is also shot?

2K The drive gear is on the crankshaft and requires complete disassembly. 350.00 means there can`t be much wrong with the oil system. I would have my own mechanic check it.

You might consider removing the oil pump and pre mixing the gas. That what I did on carb motor.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I'm going to steer clear of this boat and motor. Not a bad deal I just don't have a good track record premixing gas! bang

Hmmm.... 1mechanic says 2K.... Another mechanic says $425 plus parts to replace a drive gear. ?????? I wonder which one is closest to actual cost to replace a drive gear? Or will parts run $1600 & labor at $425.
I'm confused. I believe if I bought that motor it'd be premix for me. Just curious why a huge difference in guesstimates.

tha 425 is just a low labor rate compared ta most shops... thats gonna be tha biggest part of tha fix... think most shops have a fixed rate for pull and tear down.. in this case with just tha gear it won't require "complete" disassembly.. rotating block half can remain intact....as long as NOTHIN' ELSE is screwed up....ie: only composite material is stripped and/or shredded.. nothin' metal like tha screw and/or bushin' that holds it in place.... jmo.

The parts to fix the oil pump drive are not expensive, about 100 dollars. I wouldn`t just repair the oil gear, I would freshen up the whole motor. I don`t know if the motor has been run lacking oil already. Powerhead has to be removed anyway.
