Hey y'all,
I just got my first bass boat it is a '95 Ranger 354V with a 150 Johnson. I was idling and then pushed the throttle down to gain some speed and the engine would make a weird noise and shut off. I tried it again and it worked on idling speed and then tried to gain some more speed and it shut off again. 5 minutes later I could not even go into idling speed. The engine just shut off in general. I checked the oil resivoir and it looked like there was very little in it. I could see some but it was pretty much empty. I'm wondering if this happened because I need more oil? I think the engine was acting that way so I didn't blow it. Also I know my engine takes xd30 but should I use a certain brand?
Thanks

Nope should have just triggered oil alarm. I do not believe a 95 Johnson is smart enough to know that the reservoir is low. Running low on oil will kill your engine but in a different was and it will be a sound you will not forget.

I would fill the oil tank with a good brand TC-W3 2 cycle oil and change the fuel filter or filters. If the fuel lines are old they may need to be replaced also because ethanol eats the inside of the old rubber hoses and deposits the [censored] inside the carbs. Then I would try it. If it was run without oil the engine would seize and not turn over.

If it still dies or bogs down with a load on it I would think spark plugs and then carb rebuilds and maybe fuel pump....these are pretty general things to do and there have been a lot of these type issues lately.

I'm not too familiar with that motor but on my old Merc if it still acted like that after taking care of plugs and fuel stuff I would have the stator and power packs checked..... don't know about this on a Johnson though....

Thanks for taking your time to write this. It's going to help a lot. Hopefully it won't be anything more than putting in more oil.

Sounds like you have a fuel system problem.

Okay, not the news I want to hear. Bought the boat 4 days ago. Good thing it has a 30 day warranty on the engine. Do you know if it takes Johnson xd30, can I switch and put quicksilver oil in it?

I started running a synthetic TC-W3 2 stroke oil in mine, should be able to run any name brand but probably a good idea to stick to the same one once you change.

If it has a oil level sensor it would sound a alarm when it drops to a 1/4 tank. One beep every 20 to 40 seconds.
When you fill the oil tank back up and if this seems to have solved the problem then you ran it out of oil and may have damaged the engine.

Hopefully the engine shut off to prevent it from damaging it.

A 2 stroke can't run with out oil.
If it was out I would think it would not crank at all.
To me it seems like it was trying to run but seizing up and getting worse as it heated up.
Idk but I wish you the best of luck.

take it back to whoever gave you the 30 day warranty and ask them to look at it. no sense in guessing when u have a warranty.

Unless you are a qualified outboard mechanic, there's no sense guessing if you DON'T have a warranty.

The old Johnson motors were good tuff engines but the oiling system sucked. I am not even close to being a mechanic but I personally know people that fried their engine when the oiler quit working, no alarm or warning of any kind, just a sudden noise, then nothing, engine fried. They all had plenty oil in the tank, just quit pumping oil with no alarm. Many say that this was one of the reasons that OMC went out of business.
Many others just eliminate the oiler and mix oil in the gas.
