So I have heard and seen all the stories about the handling and ability to turn at wot. First off I'm new to this boat and do t have the grapes to even try. I got a little sporty and thought I would try a moderate turn at 45 mph. And the boat spun out on me! I wasn't t quite ready for that to happen. At no point did it feel unsafe to me as the bow dug in and planted me firmly in the seat. No side movement in the seat. My question is what did do wrong? I'm thinking that I may have been trimmed down too much, as I'd bit and spun at the first sigh of the left turn. And yes, open water, life jacket and kill cord in use.

What you experienced was called bow steering. You are correct you trimmed down too much. With seat time you will be able to slide that boat through a turn. I always liked dirt track racing sliding a car around turns snow too. I slide my Skeeter through turns I keep the speed and trim up gently turn the wheel you will feel the hull start to slide. Turning it like a car will result in what you experienced. Seat time seat time seat time turn sharply when you must slide when you can be firm yet gentle she w9ill treat you right.

Thanks MB, I obviously need the seat time. I need to keep practicing this in the event I do need to make rapid corse adjustment. I do know how to stop pretty fast now!

To make a sharp turn do not let off on the power. The prop will dig and keep the bow up and the strakes will dig in for the turn. If you are trimmed too high the prop will lose bite and the bow will drop and dig in. Its a matter of maintaining energy in the turn to keep the bow up as long as possible. Eventually it will fall off but your speed should be reduced to the point where it will not dig in as much and you will slide around. Takes practice.
I have had some rough experiences in my boat from wakes but it has always kept me in the seat and I attribute them to my inexperience. Four years later I have learned to really drive my boat both for performance and for comfort.

To get a feel for the bow coming around trim about halfway up. Stay at idle and turn all the way to the stop. It will be a slow arc. Give it some gas and you will feel the bow rise and pivot around.

When trimmed up high you will probably find the steering a bit tighter. You might also see the water pressure drop off dramatically in a tight turn. Just means you need to trim down just a bit.

No substitute for seat time. Above all take it slow and wear your life jacket and kill switch (which I see you already do).

The 250 will make the turns with enough seat time. Ive had a ZX185c and a ZX225 and my dad has a ZX250 with a 300. The 18 footer I could drive like a 18 foot jet ski. Full throttle turns were easy. The 225 is still pretty sporty but bigger. The 250 is like a Cadillac with a huge engine. Its not quite as nimble and quick as the smaller boats even though it is the fastest top end.
