Just picked up a 2000 Charger with a 225 Johnson HO, its been sitting outside uncovered for approx 7 years. Needless to say carpet and seats are both being replaced. I'd like some suggestions on best way to go about removing years of tree sap, pollen, and gunk off the fiberglass.
The initial plan I have is to wipe it down with acetone, wash the hell out of it, buff with compound, then buff with wax. Any better suggestions?

I don't think I would be using acetone on fiberglass. The internet is your friend. Google "Removing tree sap from fiberglass" and see what it tells you.

I think the acetone will work good. Wet sand next. Then compound and wax. Or you could just wrap it so you will look like a pro and have everyone e follow you around.

Acetone wont hurt it at all for the application I am using it for. I wouldn't suggest wiping down your boat with it unless you are going to wax it as the acetone will destroy any and all wax. Its exactly what is used to remove glue after a wrap is removed, and by many fiberglass shops that buff and clean up boats in the initial cleanup phase.
If it just wont clean up worth a darn I will go ahead and get it wrapped... just looking for any suggestions or tricks some of my fellow TFF members may know. Forget google, I'm at the best place in Texas to talk fishing!

Unless you are just set on doing it yourself have you thought about using one of the guys who posts on the forum that will wet sand it and get it all waved up for you? I'm sure they are used to dealing with it

I have a very good friend thats a marine mechanic, he will help me with the engine work and the install on the carpet.. but the rest of it I am set on doing myself. Making this boat truly my own is a challenge I welcome, plus cleaning it up by putting in some elbow grease and $100 or less in material sure beats $500 to have it done professionally.

acetone won't do a thing to tree sap, it is resin and a heat gun and scraper for the worst parts (dull the scraper) then some bug off from wally world should do the trick.
check wally world for sap specific cleaners too. goof off may be another good choice, I know lowes sells the small lighter fluid size for pretty cheap, if that works get a gal.

Luckily there isn't much wood on the boat, but I do definitely have to replace that as well. Pretty excited about the project, ready for the weekend to get here so I can get it going...
Thank you Hop for the suggestion sir!

Try mineral spirits/paint thinner. It is basically made from the same thing as sap and won't hurt the finish. Greased Lightning will take off the organic stains like Kick'n Bass.

Gut feeling tells me it's gonna be a sharp looking boat when you get finished. Amazing improvement with just power washing. Good luck on the PROJECT boat.
