No, the only requirement is height. There is a specific measurment but I don't recall it. If the white light is above everything else on the boat, and it meets Coast Guard visibility requirements, you'll be OK.

just has to be on meter above the front lights, 3' or so and no one will say a word.

Be sure to have 360 degree visibility of the stern light (higher than the motor or other parts of the boat).
