I'm a total noob to fishing. I just bought a kayak and plan to do some lake fishing in my area. So, it would be mainly bass. I want a spincaster as my first reel. Can anyone point me to some sites/links/FAQs? I keep going back to a Zebco 33 which is the only thing I have ever used when I've gone with friends. The Pflueger President looks good, too.

I prefer not to spend more than $60 for my first combo since I'm new and am on a tight budget.

Nothing wrong with the 33 reel. It has been a stand by for most newer anglers for decades. I would marry that too an Academy Ethos rod, on sale for 1/2 off when they have a rod riot. That would put you in about on your limit of a budget. The Pfueger is a good reel, but it is a baitcast reel. If you are looking for a baitcast combo, the Lews American Hero goes for $80 and it is a steal of a deal. Buy it with a 7' MH fast action tip rod and be done shopping. GREAT setup for the money. The Ethos rod I would use would be the 7' MH faction action rod and it would do all you needed it too. Hope this helps. Tight lines keep safe and good luck.

OH, sorry, they have a baitcast reel that is called the President as well. Not familiar with their spincast, but that woudl put you in a lot cheaper than my combo. If pusth comes to shove, buy a Zebco 33 and put on the rod. Being 6'6" rod with a moderate taper would not be as strong as the MH rod, but it would work for most things that you would fish it with. Might be a little light for the jigs, though, but for normal fishing it would be okay, I believe. I prefer a longer rod, but that is just me, nothing wrong with a 6'6" rod. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe adn good luck.

If you like the 33, stick with it. I'm using the 808, but it seems like the 33 is a good reel too.

Here are a few links about picking a reel:
