I'm thinking I can heat up the old one(on the metal) and slide it off w needle nose pliers and then glue the new one in place. I've glued a few on broken tips but never replaced one, I don't want to cut it off, any help would be appreciated.

Yes just use a lighter and heat it up a little and slide it off the rod tip...then glue the new one on...just don't heat it too much because you can damage the blank

It does not take a lot of heat to soften the glue.

Heat pull, heat pull, heat pull..... Be careful with the heat as it is pretty easy to fry the end of the rod inside the ferrule. I had one guy suggest hanging the rod /reel combo by the tip to provide a constant gentle pull as you heat the ferrule.
