Hey guys.

I pulled out my 309 yesterday and seems there is a hickup when reeling and casting. I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a place i could ship it to for repair. The reel only cost around 50 bucks or so, so if its too expensive I'll just get a new one i suppose.

What do you mean by hiccup? They are pretty easy reels to work on and replacement parts are easy to find.

I have one that dad bought in 1959 and still fish it, I have had apart many times, What is yours not doing right? They are easy to repair and get parts for. Is yours a "China" reel if so enough said. The parts are not exchangeable with the US made reels for the most part.

Nah man. It says made in the us. The only thing its doing is when i pull line out, or reel in. It hits a snag and kinda stops for a second. Or gets harder to reel, or pull. I just don't know what parts to order and im kinda afraid to take it apart too.

Here's Alan Tani's guide to the Penn 209, you're 309 is basically the same.

It's most likely it's a dirty worm gear, bent worm gear cover, bent slotted post or a damaged idler gear. I'd give the idler gear a quick visual inspection and look for missing or damaged teeth and if it looked okay I'd check the worm gear.

Here's Penn's schematic.

I have had a similar problem with some of my penn M-series. The problem has always been the worm gear. It has stuck so bad on me from time to time that I have had to stop while fighting a fish and put it in free spool and let the fish take some line and then start reeling again.

No problem once I found out it was the worm gear and replaced it. If that is your issue the parts are cheap and most academy's will have them.

Just guessing the paul is chipped, you may have one on the left side there is a screw with an extra under it if it has not been removed, 2 minute fix if that's it.

Its definitely not the worm gear. You can take the worm gear completely out and reel, does the same thing. I am gonna try what you said lend, its a fairly me reel so it would be there. I am sure hopping so. I don't want to completely tear it down cause i am nearly legally blind, and don't want to loose any important parts. So if it isn't the 2 minute fix. Its off to roys answer desertangler said. Or in the junk pile lol.

I think pcf is gonna be right with the idle gear. Still not 100% sure though..
