I've seen on a couple of You Tube videos where the plastic holding the large gear on the left side is removed and after cleaning the gear is replaced and held in place by a C-clip. Can anyone tell me where these clips are available or the size needed and availability at hardware stores?

If I visualize correctly what you are saying, you are referring to the cog wheel. Some people replace the cog wheel with one that is fitted with a bearing, thus needing the little C-clip. The clip is the same one used to hold down the driveshaft and the handle under the handle nut.

C-clip:

Cog Wheel:

You can find the upgraded cog wheel and bearing at dadsoletackle.com or just the c-clip. You can also find the c-clip at ereplacementparts.com, but I think shipping is cheaper from dadsoletackle.com.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, will give them a call. I have three Abu's that I just put Boca bearings in and they still don't seem right. I 'll look at sending them over there and see what upgrades and gear ration changes are possible.

Called Dads Ole Tackle this morning. Talked to the guy for a few minutes and was pretty impressed. Looked at his website and he has a ton of parts and seems to be reasonably priced. Going to send two C3s and a C4 to him for a super-tune. I'm planning on picking up a couple more C3s so if I like his work and I don't see why I wouldn't, I'll send those to him also. Thanks for the tip.

Yup. I get a lot of my parts from that vendor. Never had a bad issue.

I only use abu sweeden reels and upgrade all my reels.
Abec 7 spool bearings only make a little difference. If you want to do it right then I'd replace the cog wheel with a bearing cog wheel and also a new worm gear with bearings also. If you look at the cog wheel pictured above I would also never put a buttload of grease on the cog. Your only defeating the purpose of the upgrade. It will make it slower with too much grease. You only need 1 drop of oil on the cog wheel and very little grease on the teeth. When you put the new worm gear in u only need 1 drop of oil on each side.
If you do this you will have a 10 times smoother reel and increase your casting distance well over 50%.

I agree completely. I won't buy anything Chinese to save twenty bucks. One of the upgrades suggested aside from the bearing cog wheel was the dual bearing worm gear. Having bearings on anything that moves with the spool makes sense.
You are correct about the spool bearings. When I put the Boca bearings in, I saw very little change in smoothness or speed.
Question.. Does a ceramic pawl add any benefit?

The ceramic Pawl does make a little difference but not much.

I upgrade all my drags to carbon also.
It's well worth the extra $10 bucks a reel and makes a huge difference.
