I've been doing some reading. I like what I've seen about the Abu Garcia Revo SX Generation 3 reels. I fish for bass, sand bass, and fresh water stripers, and sometimes catfish. I would like to pair it with a good 6'6" or 7' medium action rod.

Would this be a good all-purpose rig? I want to be able to cast light lures as well as have it heavy enough to handle bigger baits.

Thoughts/opinions/suggestions?

IMO, a medium action rod would be under-powered to handle stripers and catfish. I would find a medium heavy rod with a fast tip. It's difficult to recommend a particular brand without knowing a price point. Lots of options are out there but it will be hard to cover all those species you mention. Good luck! Also, Abu Garcia makes some fine reels, but I would take a good look at the Lew's LFS series of reels for $99. They are awesome reels!

I agree. A 7' Med Heavy would be a great rod to go with the SX. I personally like Falcon Orginal rods around $100 or if you want to step up, St. Croix Avid.

Historically really light lures don't work well on baitcasters as the cast must have enough momentum and weight to take line causing the spool to turn releasing line. A spinning reel is cable of casting very light 1/8 ounce jigs all the way up to heavy 2 ounce jigs.

I use different setups for cats the few times I fish for them, but my go to rigs for stripers would work fine. I like 7' MH rods from TFO and pair them with Lews BB2 reels. I also carry a couple of 7'ML Inshore rods with Lews BB1's and 2's for sandies (I can throw lighter lures with them). They too have caught stripers and big reds with no issue. I hooked a big blue cat with one of them this winter dead sticking a fluke and it was quite the challenge. It came off right at the boat.

But for one all purpose, a 7'MH with the SX should do the trick.

Also, I got a steal on some Diawa Airds a while back and put them on 7' Ethos MH rods. I have under $100.00 in each setup and we have caught several hundred sandies and some good hybrids on them with no problems yet. That Aird reel is a lot of reel for the price.

Great advice above, and w/o knowing what your price range is, it would be hard to get into specifics. I LOVE the St. Croix Avid and the Dobyns Savvy lines f rods for the $170 range. If it is more like $100, then I would go with the Falcon or Dobyns Fury line or rods. If money is of no object, I would go with the Dobyns Champion line of rods, GREAT for the cost and great warranty. Hope his helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
