I'm not much of a spinning reel guy. I have 2 "cheap" reels on fairly nice 6'6" MH rods. I would like to upgrade the reels and use for something. what is the best use for a spinning rod--reel & what would be a decent reel to put on a nice rod ?.

As usual, I brag about my Pflueger President 6900 Series...mine is a few years old, and it was a 6700 Series, but same reels. It came with a Bass Pro Carbonlite MH rod...I like; about $59. ...------

I use a spinning reel for any finesse or light topwater and small crankbaits and I like skipping with a spinning reel also. I use Daiwa Steez 2508 and the new Ballistic EX 2500 I use lines from 10 - 12 lb flouro brands Toray High Grade Flouro and Sunline Sniper.

Spinning rods are also good for jerkbaits and small crank baits. Especially when its windy
Shimano C14+ is a great reel with a sweet drag system

Good lists!
Drop shot, split shot, weightless worms/plastics, T-Rig, light Carolina Rig, spybaits, vertical spooning, pitching/flipping in many cases, top waters, smaller crankbaits, inline and other spinners, really light lures of all kinds, all finesse techniques.
Really, the only place you will do a whole lot better with a bait caster would be heavy jig presentations, fishing really thick cover where you have to power the fish out of it before they wrap themselves up on things.
With a spinning reel, assuming the drag is not letting line out, you wait then pull up on the rod tip then reel down on the unstressed line, and you repeat it over and over to land the fish. A bait caster works more like a winch. As a matter of fact it is a winch.
Not only these presentations, but these conditions: spinning tackle better for skipping under docks, fishing into head and quartering winds.
Alas, most people don't really know how to use spinning tackle. For a really good primer on it, watch the Capt. Chris Meyers' videos on spinning tackle usage. That is all they use down fishing in the flats around Florida.

I would like to upgrade the reels and use for something. what is the best use for a spinning rod--reel & what would be a decent reel to put on a nice rod ?. Seems like folks answered your questions on the uses....I will answer the decent reel part. Shimano...best reel for the money, whatever your price point is...Better gears, closer tolerances, fantastic bearings, and will last much longer than a comparable reel, at each price point...The Sedona line is a good solid reel at a decent price point...I like the stradics personally....but only started buying them after many good years of fishing the Sedona's and symetre's...I have had a few Sedona's that lasted over a decade...of abuse, without ever cleaning them...I have tried all the rest (when someone comes crowing on their stuff, I go buy it and give it a try) They just don't hold up.... Now on the sizes...A medium heavy rod would normally dictate fishing larger reels, in the 4000 series, although line weight will dictate the size of the reel you need. I personally, like the 2500 series and medium light non parabolic (stiff back bone, fast tip) rods paired together. That combo will allow you to fish a wide variety of species. If you intend to fish saltwater, just make sure the reel you purchase has ARB (anti rust bearings) designed for salt environments. Hope this information helps.

I was a dedicated bait caster for so many years, but I made the switch to spinning gear and haven't looked back. (I do still use a bait caster when wading 'cause this style simply works better for being low to the water.) My reels of choice are a Shimano Stella 3000 and a Diawa Steez 3102, both with 8# McCoy and a 15# fluorocarbon leader, both on Loomis NRX rods. The light line makes for great casting and the most excellent drag on both of these reels let me get away with it. Used to be that spinning reels were notorious for line twist - not the case any longer if they are handled properly. Spool up under good tension, close the bail by hand, use a good line conditioner (KVD is my choice) and line twist is never a problem. A spinning reel just feels better in the hand, having it's center of gravity below the rod instead of above. Get a good rig, use it right and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
Knowin' where you're going' is mostly known' where you have been.
