An authorized service facility is the only place that can do it without voiding the warranty. I'm not sure if they will still add a longer one any more. Seems like I remember being told that they won't do that. If you want to shorten it, you can do it yourself very easily. I remember on the older models, you could buy the lower assembly on ebay pretty cheaply. It was a new motor and the shaft. Again easy to swap those out yourself.
Try calling Boris marine and talk to them.

If you are wanting to shorten the length, that should be easy. remove the top of the unit unplug the cords that go to the propeller. use like a copper cutter tool and trim it to what you want. redrill the hole that holds the top of the motor on.

He would also need to shorten the wires. there's not a lot of room under the head and he'll have 15" of wire to find room for. Not a hard job at all. I did my own on an old terrova a couple of years ago. I think it was about a 20 minute job.

A tubing cutter won't cut the composite shaft, it will crush it. Have to use a hacksaw and put something inside to protect the wires. On another note, the shafts in a Terrova, Ultrex, Ulterra cannot be changed. The center section is bonded to the shaft at MinnKota so we (ASCs) have to change the shaft and center section at the same time. The shaft/center section is shipped in as a 60" shaft and we cut them to length before building the lower unit, except for the Ulterra and due to the control boards, they're cut to length at MinnKota. We can change the shaft length on that if you need it done still. Ulterra is the one one we can't change shaft length on due to the trim.
