wanting to mount a second unit to run GPS charts only to be used for a boat lanes chip do I need to mount a transducer ? I think I know the answer but just want to be sure.

No. If the unit has an internal GPS receiver, all that's needed is the head unit itself.

Also depends on what units you have. Some allow you to turn sonar off. Running some units without transducer connected up can damage the processor.

I'm not sure why it would be desirable to have a unit that only displays charts. DI/SI drops out at around 6-7 MPH and it's simple enough to toggle between screens. I guess if you want to spend the $$$ and have the space on the console to make it happen...

I guess if you want to spend the $$$ and have the space on the console to make it happen... Well if you have a Garmin that does not have maps for the waters you fish and want a usable Chartplotter, that unit would fit your need without purchasing a sonar/GPS unit so you can have additional mapping coverage.

Love hummingbird for fish finding . Hate their maps and GPS so that is why I have both. Johnny
