 Can a transducer cable be cut and reconnected?

A buddy of mine bought a new minn Kota fortrex trolling motor with the built in universal sonar and he has an old depth finder, a pinpoint, which has been discontinued. We are trying to figure out if we can cut off the connector to the back of the unit and reconnect it to the new cable for the trolling motor?
