Looking to upgrade my trolling motor and wanted to go with a spot lock type system - wondering about the ins & out on Motorguide or Minn Kota as to whats the easiest to use? or the most maintance free?

Both brands are simple to use. Both have remotes and most models come with a foot pedal which most people don't like to use. MK has the Ultrex which is like a hybrid. It is still cable steer foot control that most people are comfortable in using with the electronic functions of the other types. Newest and most popular trolling motor out right now. Then there is the Ulterra which has auto stow and deploy at the press of a button plus all the other features. The XI's and terrovas are mainly a remote based motor that do have foot pedals but they don't operate the same as traditional cable steer so most don't use the foot control and just work off of the remote.

The new models are all very accurate for the spotlock. There are options that they can be linked to your fish finders and offer more options for you to use. If you plan on buying one and linking to fish finder then you need to buy the brand that matches your fish finder and in the MK version you need the one with the link option. If you do not plan on linking them then you can buy either brand and they can work independently for spot lock and a few other features. Really just boils down to price and which features do you want.

The only one that I know of that might require a little more maintenance is the ulterra, just a little lube and adjust a screw to keep the belt tightened for the auto deploy feature to operate smoothly.

The MG Xi5 and the MK Terrova remotes are not equal. The Minn Kota stands supreme. The Motor Guide is a remote with 5 buttons without any display.. The Minn Kota is a mini computer with a LCD screen that allows you a visual confirmation of action.

The Minn Kota is the only way to go.

At this time there are several GPS type electric steer trolling motors to choose from. Motorguides Xi5 is the only one in the Motorguide lineup. In the MinnKota lineup you have the options of the Ulterra, Ultrex, Terrova, PD2. The Xi5, Terrova, and PD2 are all electric steers that stow and deploy by "pushing" the trolling motor off the ramps. These will mount in such a way that the front 6 to 8" hang off the front of the boat to allow for the transmission to cradle in the mount. Mounting an external transducer to these (along with the Ulterra) is not recommended and has to be done using aftermarket items. The Ulterra carries the same features as the Terrova and it is automatic stow and deploy. The new kid on the block is the Ultrex. It combines the features of the Terrova in a standard bowmount (uses a Fortrex mount). An external transducer for DI can be mounted to the trolling motor. The footpedal is constructed much the same as the Fortrex except for placement of control buttons. It is still an electric steer, however with the use of pressure sensors it allows the steering to respond quicker then other electric steers. The steering motor turns a pinion that moves cables attached to the footpedal so it gives the feel of a footpedal steer. Hope this helps and if you have other questions, I'll be happy to answer, just give me a call.
