Have 225 sho and what's the max safe RPM you would run? I grew up being told never go over 5000 but newer technology and all wasn't sure if it's to hard on motor to run higher rpm

Your owner's manual should list that.

Most of the time I run mine around the mid-point of the operating range. That's where the maximum horse power is going to be developed it that hard. You also see the same guys online looking for power heads and lower units.. The bass guys have two engine speeds, WOT and stop, but I don't see a need to push a motor constantly.

You want to prop and run an outboard near its maximum recommended RPM.

At WOT and with the boat loaded as close to the way you'll be running it as possible.

At 5000 I run around 64 and at 6000 I hit 74. It's a 225 sho.

I have a 250 SHO and I hold it to 5600 max. That said I normally run at 4500 RPM's
