I just replaced my battery charger with a new minkota 460pc. The old one looked to have overheated and the plastic case melted slightly. It was the factory charger that came new with the 2011 legend. After installing the new charger I am worried that it is getting too hot when charging. Not sure how hot they normally get but its getting hot enough that you can't hold your hand on it. The lights on the charger show that it's working but I unplugged it for now as I am worried I will burn it up. Can anyone tell me how hot it should get and what might cause it to get so hot if that's not normal. Thanks!

Might need to have your batteries checked. Make sure they have water, if they are serviceable. Beyond that, check with the manufacturer of the charger.

Checked the water and they looked fine. Could a short at some other part of the boat cause this? I have considered disconnecting one battery at a time to see if charger still gets hot. I may just have to take it somewhere. Any recommendations?

Too hot to touch is not normal. Have the batteries load tested. One shorted cell is all it takes to overload a charger.
