For those who have fished that area which town would you stay in? I will be there late July through the 5-6 th of August. Non fishing wives are going too. Any information would be appreciated.

Had a really nice day throwing size 8 stimulators on the Piedra near Pagosa Springs...late July might be a little late for the stonefly hatch. Gonna try up near Durango in Oct. Don't know what kind of camping you do, but my buddy and I stayed here:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review...s_Colorado.html

You cross the Piedra on the drive in, and there's a trail (to the left and parking) that takes you to the river where it joins William's creek (also fish there), and William's reservoir is also close, and you can fish below it. It was great for a few days...pretty wife friendly. You can fish downtown too...but not my style.

I like Pagosa and this cabin is right on the San Jaun if you want the name of the place. You can step right off the back deck and fish or you can hit Turkey Creek, East fork, West fork or the Piedra as mentioned. Close to South Fork also.

Ladies will like pagosa better...and the fishing will be good. Just a hop skip and a jump from the San juan

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Both towns are great and offer a lot to non fishing people ...I like Pagosa better ...maybe because I live there smile

We have had a very mild winter and snowpack is about half of normal. Depending on what kind of spring and summer we have flows could already be getting very low in late July and early August.

Check back the closer time comes ...if you end up in Pagosa drop by Williams Creek Anglers for current conditions and a great selection of flies.

Durango is a bigger town and there would be more shopping for the ladies. Both cities have several amazing rivers/creeks nearby.

I have fished the San Juan in Pagosa and below Navajo Dam(more technical water). Williams Creek is beautiful and about 20 minutes north of Pagosa. We fished Park and Pass Creek, both were pleasant small streams. I haven't done a lot of fishing around Durango other than the small Junction Creek in town. I hear Hermosa Creek is special for dry fly action and the Animas should be on everyones list to fish.

I'd stay around Lake Vallecito - pine 2 minutes, san juan, 1 hour, piedra 45 mins, animas 20 minutes....the area is the bomb. VRBO places are very reasonable.

30 minutes from Durango
46 minutes from Pagosa

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Several shops in an area downtown, public and private springs, they can take a soak and have a drink... All within walking distance...

I went one year in august to Pagosa Springs. It was as hot as Dallas.

I don't always catch fish, but when I do, I prefer Dos Hybrids
