Woohoo! Finally caught a couple fish on the fly down here. I haven't had the guts to bust out the fly rods on my days off this past month and a half with 20-30 m.p.h. winds, but found a nice point that's shielded a bit while bait fishing one morning.

The wasn't any action on top, but knew there was some sort structure under the surface as we caught mangrove, red, and yellow tail snapper a few days before, so cut off the crease fly and I tied on a Crystal Critter, thanks for the recommendations to saltwaterflies.com, and started with a 5 second count and eventually went to 10 seconds. 10 seconds was the key as I hooked up on my first fish, a small yellow tail. He was only 7 inches, but a fun fight on the 8wt. 10 more minutes of casting and landed a 10 inch crevalle jack. Much more of a fighter. Once the sun got higher the wind shifted and messed up my casting, I couldn't keep my backcast out of the mangroves behind me and caused me to rush to a forward cast. I'm already a bad caster!

It was fun, no monsters, but reminds me I need to work more on learning to double haul and working with the wind. Also I need to remember my GoPro!

A jack crevalle of any size is a fun fight. I can't wait to get my first saltwater species on a fly.

I know, I know. I left my phone in my bag and my GoPro in my room. I'll make a point of having them with me. I heard of some tailing fish so I'll try wading next time I have the chance.
