Headed up there for a weekend Aug 12-14. Anyone fished the Ark this time of year?

Recommendations on access points, or general pointers? I plan on dropping by Ark Anglers (local fly shop) before hitting the river Saturday morning.

Thanks!

Yes, go see Greg Felt at Arkanglers. If you travel there via CO 50 and Canon City, also stop to see Taylor or Bill at Royal Gorge Anglers.

Salida has a plethora of access points. Salida East has some too. Just downstream at Wellsville there is access as well. I don't make it up above Big Bend very often, but Boona Vista has some access points as well. go to Arkanglers website and he has listing of access points, flow rates, and a pretty good update of conditions.

This year is a low water year compared to the last few. Flows are around 600 CFS and will stay that way until late August. Gin clear this year too, unless monsoons kick up the flows and debris from Chalk Creek and South Arkansas creek. As for bugs, think yellow sallies, small golden stones, pmd nymphs, and caddis. If you want dry action, wait for the evening caddis hatch. Elk hair caddis, adams irresistables, and small stimmies work on top.

I will be in the same area two weeks later. I fish up there 2-3 times a year. If you only have an hour and you are in Buena Vista, head up CR306 and fish cottonwood creek above rainbow lake campground. Small Brookies and browns hammer dry flies all day up there. Some browns can get big for the size of the water.

Have fun
