When the river is up, like it has been since we got that last rain, I can't wade fish. I live on the bank of the Brazos and a creek too, so when the river is up I can bank fish at the creek mouth, and be in my own yard. It's a slice of heaven, no doubt of it.

The creek mouth is one of the fishiest looking places I've ever seen, when the river is up. But getting the fish in there to bite can be a big challenge, as it was yesterday. There must have been 50 gar in there and nothing was biting. I was sitting there with bait in the water, watching my line intently and wondering what it was going to take to get a bite when the buzzing sound came slowly to my consciousness. It sounded like a bee buzzing around my head. So I swung my arm around my head a couple of times. But the buzzing didn't fade or falter. Not a bee maybe?

Once I began to focus in on the sound I realized that it sounded like a woman's voice off in the distance, just buzzing away non-stop. Pretty soon I realized that it sounded a bit like my wife's voice. Once that thought occurred to me I focused in really hard and realized it was my wife's voice. Focused in like I was now I heard her say "You didn't hear a thing I said did you?"

As I was about to reply I felt a tug on my line, and having waited what seemed like hours for a bite I naturally turned my attention back to fishing and landed a real nice bluegill, about 10" long and so wide from belly to back fin that I could just barely get hold of it to remove the hook before tossing it back. Then I turned back to my wife to see what it was she wanted, but she was gone. I never did find out what she wanted to tell me, but the fact that she said it anyway must have relieved whatever pressure she was under because she didn't say a single word to me the rest of the day.

I'm just glad I could be there for her like that.
