I am thinking about traveling throughout the US in January-April to fly fish. Does anyone have any "must stop" destinations for winter fishing? As of now, I don't really have a plan.

My buddy caught his largest ever rainbow trout ever in the lower mt fork river during the winter. It was lightly snowing and the trout were still active.

Guadalupe River! Come stay in New Braunfels, enjoy good BBQ, see San Antonio and Austin, yank rainbows out of the river.

For trout? This is a broad subject. I would be on California delta, lake falcon, amistad,or southern Florida for staging pre-spawn bass. Maybe chunk and ducking a rainbow trout streamer on Dixon or casitas in California for freak bass. I would be in the north west for the winter run steelhead. As far as trout go just think tail waters especially those with good populations of Browns slow stripping streamers in late winter can be fantastic for trophy fish(little red, white, norfork, beaver)I would keep in mind Taylor creek the pan and blue in Colorado. On the way back I would hit the earliest run of sandbass(also by far the biggest in the state) the Sabine. I missed a thousand ideas but will give you a start. I can't wait to see what you decide on.

The pan would be my choice all of that great water above mile marker 12. Great place to catch a fish of your dreams.

There is still good fishing to be had in Colorado during the winter, 1.5 to 2 hours from Denver. The Pan, Blue river, best would be the tailwaters. Sounds like a fun trip, let us know what you decide.

as robert hunter said the tailwaters of the ozarks are fantastic in winter. Honestly I would never attempt fishing colorado in winter. Did it once, there are fish to be had on stuff that's not frozen, and yes, they're big, (caught the largest trout of my life in the dream stream of the south platte in March about 4 years ago) but it's windy, cold, and miserable. The Sabine too would be great. Steelhead are a blast too. I'd personally be the northwest in January, I'd be in the ozarks for a few weeks in late January/early feb, mid February-mid March id be on the Sabine and any of the other rivers with fabled sandbass runs. By April everything from the oklahoma border south has warmed up and Id be chasing sandies, crappie, black bass, etc. on different lakes in the south.

I'm headed out to Louisiana in a couple of days for bull red's. The guide tells me they are up and in through February.

I am on the Conejos now. Had a tuff day on Monday but I have another plan for this morning. It only takes one bite to make it the trip of a life time.

+1 Conejos, although it can get brutally cold right now. +1 NOLA too for the brutal bulls. Neither of these are DIY's really.

+1 on fishing for the big bull reds in Louisiana, but the NOLA area is overrated IMHO. This past year I fished my way north as the weather warmed; started on the Texas coast in Feb and ended up in North Dakota fishing for pike and walleye after ice-out. It was a heck of a time. Looking forward to hearing about your trip!

Trip to NOLA has been postponed due to continous bad weather in the time slots available to us. I would like to hear your alternatives. Especially if they are in TX. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about the postponed trips, I know how much that can suck. Galveston area can fish well all winter long, especially as warm as it has been. You will see some bulls around, but most of those will be caught adjacent to the deep channels on warm days as they move up into edge areas to sun. There are certainly places up and down the Texas coast where they can be caught, but if you're just after the big bulls, Louisiana is the place. That's a really tough DIY trip though.
