As temperatures steadily drop in the water, where do you guys typically go to fly fish? I know ponds haven't shut down yet, but I am just trying to get ideas for the winter. What species do you target in the winter? Which are most active in the winter? What flies and techniques do you use? I want to fly fish as much as possible this winter and abstain from the spinning rod as much as possible, unlike last winter. Thanks for the input!

There's the white bass run, and there are always salt water fish to throw flies at.

Creek fishing for crappie and white bass. Clousers and spinner flies for the white bass. Marabou jigs and popper/dropper rigs for crappie / white bass.
Pond fishing was pretty good for me most of last winter. I caught trophy green sunfish, redear sunfish and bluegill in December through March of last year. Evening fishing after a warm winter day produced most of the best fishing. Size 8 or 10 Briminators and woolly buggers worked for me.

Trout on the Guadalupe can be caught year round, but the prime season is late November - early March.
The Guadalupe below Canyon Dam is a tailwater, which means nymphs and wets fished deep.
And as others have said, places like the Laguna Madre from Corpus to Port Isabel remain fishable year round for reds, drum, bonefish, etc.

Is the skipjack not a bonefish? I heard it called one when I lived on South Padre.

Well sir, I owe you an apology. I researched the topic and finally found a site that gave "bonefish" as another name for ladyfish. I've been catching them since the early sixties , first in Florida and now in Texas, and this is the first I've heard of them being referred to as "bonefish". But it is legitimate.

From now on, I shall endeavor to use the scientific species name to avoid this kind of confusion! I recall pulling one in while fishing the flats for reds and my guide said it was a "bonefish" or "ladyfish," but the actual name was "skipjack." The fish promptly shat all over me as I was releasing it, so I decided "bonefish" was more apt than "ladyfish." It was still a fun fish to catch.
