Fishing in shallow water I could see the huge bass moving at my bait like a dark green submarine. It hit with a huge whirl of water, I clinched down on the line and rared back hard to set the hook, bringing the rod up high with both arms. The bass felt like a buick, there was no give, no slightest movement, more like having snagged on a log. Then the rod snapped, shattering with a "CRAAACCK" sound, into three pieces. The bass was gone, the rod was history, and the fishing trip was over. I had a 12lb tippet on, no way the rod should have broken before the tippet. I've had my tippet broken lots of times by these big bass before.
I'd bought the rod at Cabelas about three years ago, no possible way I still had the receipt. But I vaguely recalled that they had a reasonably decent warranty so decided to check up on that. I called their customer service, took a while but when I got through I was told that the rod, a TLR Cabelas brand was warranted for life against manufacturer's defects, I'd just need to mail it to them with a copy of the receipt and fill out a form they provided on their website and include that as well.
I asked about taking it back to the store where I bought it. They said the store might not have the same rod in stock. I asked if they could mail me the new rod if they didn't have it in stock and eventually they said they could. They then checked the store's inventory and said they did have one.
I went to the store, they were really polite and cool about it, but they did not have the exact same rod in stock as I'd just been told by their national customer service. They didn't ask how I broke the rod either, for all they actually knew I could have slammed a car door on it. They did have a rod that was one weight heavier than my original but otherwise exactly the same, or they could have one mailed to me. I thought about it for half a second and took the one they had, I wanted to go back after that big bass that day.
I was in and out of the store in ten minutes and this was without a receipt. Had I bought another brand than one of Cabela's I'd have needed that receipt. The moral of the story is that Cabelas does have excellent warranty and customer service, and if you buy a non-Cabelas brand rod at Cabelas, save that receipt.

Yep when I bought my RLS+ Combo the sales man told me if I ever have a problem just bring it back to the store and they will take care of it . LT warranty also . Even tho PB has bought Cabelas I think as long as the stores are open they will honor LT warranties .

Yes I hope cabelas service does not stoop down to Bass Pro's now. I have always had great experiences with Cabelas had many not so much with Bass Pro. I really wish the buyout would have gone the other way around. Although there is a guy in the fly shop I really enjoyed talking with At grapevine Bass Pro. John I think I should know but Great guy to talk with.
